Surfs up on a “One Way” for beach rockers Sandollar

The purveyors of San Diego culture kick off their From the Water Tour to support the new single released on Friday that features rapper SLOAT DIXON.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (6 JUNE 2025): Ready to ride wave after wave of new music releases, beach rock band Sandollar dropped a new Pacific Records single on Friday (June 6) to set the tone for what will be a prolific second half of 2025. The award-winning band’s lead singer and keyboardist Baron Lunbeck wrote “One Way” with hip-hop lyricist SLOAT DIXON who raps on the single recorded live at VIP Studios in San Diego.

Crafting a distinct alchemy of San Diego beach culture, rock, and reggae, Sandollar’s taut five-piece unit – Lunbeck, guitarist Marco Rodrigues, guitarist-vocalist David Basham, drummer Henry Ortiz, and bassist Max Damkoehler – is augmented by trumpeter Maria Connors, trombonist John Herb and percussionist Dan Connors on “One Way,” creating a frothy wall of sound built from good-vibe melodies, shredding rock guitar, cacophonous horns, and a relentlessly funky hip-hop groove.

“‘One Way’ reminds us to go with the flow. It’s a way to describe a current on the water. My music is inspired by SoCal culture and lifestyle. We coined the expression ‘beach rock’ to describe our music, which is a unique melding of different genres. Our songs carry the message of riding a wave according to Nature’s way and taking things as they come,” said Lunbeck, a surfer who rides waves at the legendary cliffside Black’s Beach most days.

Sandollar launches the single along with a seven-date From the Water Tour on Friday night at home in San Diego at Winstons Ocean Beach. They’ll be joined on the four-state swing by Seawall Prophet and Skyler Lutes, both of whom have released music on Pacific Records.

“One Way” is the first swell of what’s ahead for Sandollar this year. Last week, they were in the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 recording tracks for a new album slated to hit in late fall. Before then, Sandollar will drop an acoustic album in August that they recorded with vocalist Kela Sako, who released her Pacific Records debut EP last December, “Speed Bumps,” which debuted at No. 4 on the iTunes Reggae Music Albums Chart and earned Sako a Best New Artist nomination from the San Diego Music Awards.

Next month, Sandollar will topline a diverse Pacific Records festival at San Diego’s Kate Sessions Park in Pacific Beach. They’ll perform at the July 13 gig with labelmates The Tourmaliners, Sako, Shane HallSlack Key ‘Ohana, and Kristina Bennett.

Formed after daily jam sessions of musicians who met in a high school woodshop class, Sandollar’s 2013 debut album for Pacific Records, “Roller Coaster Ride,” debuted on the iTunes Reggae Music Albums chart at No. 7. Their “Under the Water” won the Best World Music Album at the 2023 San Diego Music Awards and the album’s “Warrior,” was nominated for Song of the Year. Bolstered by a fervent fanbase that sings along to every tune, Sandollar’s vibey sounds have appeared on CBS’s Magnum PI and Netflix’s “Outer Banks.”
